Politics and the Crisis of 1860, Graebner, Norman A. (Editor)
6 Graebner, Norman A. (Editor) Politics and the Crisis of 1860
Urbana University of Illinois Press 1961 First Hard Cover Good No Jacket Ex-Library Octavo
156 pp. Light general and edgewear to boards. Library sticker residue to front cover. Library stamps to edges of text block. Internally, library impedimenta restricted to endpapers and title page. Text is clean, bright, unmarked. Book is solidly bound. "These five essays [by Graebner, Don E. Fehrenbacher, Robert W. Johannsen, William E. Baringer, and Avery Craven], commemorating the centennial of the first Lincoln election, were presented originally at the fourth annual Civil War Conference at Gettysburg College in November 1960. Each of these essays accepts the verdict that by the campaign of 1860 some form of crisis was inevitable. Nowhere do they insist that all choices had been eliminated except those which the North and South followed. Concerned broadly with the issues and events of the campaign, these essays dwell emphatically on the importance of slavery to the sectional conflict and to its impact on American politics."

"By showing how intensely and politically self-defeating is the monist politics of right-wing extremists, the authors in effect make a powerful argument for the much-abused pluralist, democratic politics of the American mainstream. For all its clumsiness and inequity, party politics and representative, constitutional government remain the only device that can hope to cope with a society in endless and often violent flux." -- Morton Keller

From the 19th-century mansions of Nob Hill and the Barbary Coast with its spiked drinks, he charts the 1950s San Francisco Poetry Renaissance that sired the Beat Generation. Through literature, music, and popular culture, he considers the rise of Berkeley's student activism, the genesis of hippie culture and Haight-Ashbury's legendary Summer of Love. Explaining how the Castro became the world's most famous gay neighborhood, he also reveals how a booming internet economy transformed and then threatened to destroy the city."
