Villains of All Nations: Atlantic Pirates in the Golden Age, Rediker, Marcus
56 Rediker, Marcus Villains of All Nations: Atlantic Pirates in the Golden Age
London Verso 2004 1844670082 / 9781844670086 First UK Hard Cover Near Fine Fine Octavo
240 pp. A few faint pressure marks to rear of dustjacket. All else as new. "Pirates -- denounced as the 'common enemy of all mankind' by weighty authorities in every nation -- were heroes to many common folk in the eighteenth century, and to many more since. They created life under the flag of death, liberty in a world of despotism, and equality where hierarchy dwelled. They also made an already savage world more barbarous. Understanding these conundrums requires placing the Jolly Roger in the context of history, while respecting its place in the popular imagination."

"The journey of one man across half the world, from his home in Tahiti to 1770s London and then back again, provides us with a key to understanding the significance of Cook's three Pacific voyages and the cultural milieu in which they took place. Mai, better known as Omai, was discussed by scientists and philosophers, introduced to all the best circles and written about in everything from poetry to pornography. The legacy of Omai's encounter with Europe reveals a culture in a moment of transition, when old certainties were collapsing and new ones were yet to form."
