140 pgs. DW, now protected, is worn, with numerous small tears along the edges and small (<5mm) pieces missing from top and bottom of spine; some foxing to DW, which is unclipped. Covers are mustard-yellow cloth with red lettering to spine. Faded at top and bottom, and slightly worn at extremities of spine. Interior is clean and tightly bound. Inked owner's inscription to title page, pencilled notes to ffep, and pencilled marginal lines (no notes) on 15 or so pages (2 or 3 instances of underlining). Translated from the Czech by M. and R. Weatherall. Essays: In Praise of Newspapers; Twelve Figures in Fighting with Pens, or a Handbook of Literary Polemics; On the Natural History of the Anecdote ("Capek finds that the joke is a purely masculine manifestation"); A Few Notes on Popular Humour; Towards a Theory of Fairy-Tales; A Few Fairy-Tale Motifs; Some Fairy-Tale Personalities; Eros Vulgaris; Holmesiana, or About Detective Stories; Proletarian Art; In Praise of the Czech Language.

469 pp. General and edgewear to unclipped dustwrapper: wrinkling and discolouration along edges; some extremely short tears to ends of backpanel, and a spot of nibbling to lower back panel. Note: dustwrapper is printed on the reverse of an old (1941) War Office Ordnance Survey colour map of part of Denmark. Orange cloth boards are rubbed and faded, with a little foxing/rubbed-in dirt to edges. Upper edge of text block has orange tinting (which has partially faded) and a little foxing; fore and lower edges are lightly foxed and a little yellowed. Bookseller's stamp (D.A. McLean, Belfast) to rear fep. Internally unmarked and solidly bound.
